Golf is a booming sport in Europe. With almost 500,000 registered players, Germany already ranks third in Europe (behind England and Sweden) and continues to show significant growth. There are a total of more than 700 golf courses currently, with many more in the planning or design phase. Public courses are also blossoming across the country. While still maintaining an exclusive aura, the sport has nevertheless, spread well beyond its former affluent-only image. What hasn't been addressed up to now however is the development process of golf professionals. A large gap remains between the European Tour and the amateur levels. Aspiring professionals in Europe have to look to other continents to advance and hone their tournament skills. The European Professional Development Tour (EPD Tour) successfully fills this significant void.
In 2010, the EPD Tour will hold about 20 tournaments spanning throughout Central Europe. The tour begins in January, ending in late October with the tour championship with purses totalling more than 500,000 EUR. The tour championship will help decide which five players will earn playing privileges for the Challenge Tour in 2011.
